The ABCs of Towing Safely

Knowing the weight of your total load, including the trailer, is the first step toward towing safely. Total load weight needs to be slightly less than the vehicle tow rating. If possible, the trailer's load should be distributed evenly.

Hauling more than these limits dictate will cause undue wear and tear on the vehicle. It may even cause an accident. Modern vehicles have trailer sway control for safer travel, a trailer brake controller for safer stops and a tow-haul mode to adapt the transmission. To find out if your vehicle has these advantages, check your manual.

If you aren't sure your vehicle is right for towing, talk to the service center at Woltz & Wind Ford. They'll suggest ways to tow safely. If you are ready to trade, our staff can show you which vehicles are best equipped to handle your heaviest loads.
